composite, FHHRP art show

December 8, 2013 @ 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm
KSU Alumni Center

On Sunday December 8, 2013, the Flint Hills Human Rights Project will host a unique event: composite, an art show to raise awareness and funds for the Praxis scholarship fund. Details are on the attached poster. Local artists will be displaying original works, many of which will be for sale. The proceeds will help fund the Praxis scholarship, a competitive award sponsored by FHHRP for LGBT students to attend a local college or university. This event will also serve as our FHHRP holiday gathering. We hope you can join us to view these unique works, meet the artists, and socialize with your fellow FHHRP members. The event is open to the public so please spread the word and invite your friends and neighbors. It promises to be an enjoyable evening and a great event for a great cause.

We hope to see you there!

Elisabeth von Trapp with the Carolian Brass

December 1, 2013 @ 4:00 pm
McCainKSU, 207 McCain Auditorium, Manhattan, KS, 66506, United States

Celebrate the joyful sounds of the season.

The granddaughter of the legendary Maria and Baron von Trapp, whose story inspired “The Sound of Music,” performs Bach, Handel and show-stopping Broadway tunes accompanied by one of North American’s finest brass ensembles. The show also includes a medley from “The Sound of Music” and festive holiday favorites. A local children’s choir will accompany Von Trapp on “Edelweiss” and “My Favorite Things.”

With a voice that critics have called “hauntingly clear” (New York Times), Von Trapp has enthralled audiences from European cathedrals to Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center. Bring the entire family to a joyful celebration that will delight with wintertime and holiday cheer.

“Before the concert is over, she will have the audience gasping with the sheer beauty of her voice.” —Boston Globe

McCainKSU, 207 McCain Auditorium, Manhattan, KS, 66506, United States

Among the stops on the 2013 McCain Holiday Home Tour will be private homes, a bed and breakfast, and a sorority house.

Sponsored by The Friends of McCain Auditorium, this year’s tour will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8. The biennial fundraiser for McCain Auditorium will feature five area residences and one sorority house decorated for the holiday season. Money raised from this eventwill help support the McCain Performance Series and its education and outreach activities.

Selection and coordination of homes begins as much as a year in advance to allow homeowners adequate time to plan and prepare for the event.

“The McCain Performance Series and its outreach and education programs such as free children’s performances are largely supported by corporate sponsorships, individual giving, grants and fundraising events, including the Holiday Home Tour,” said Todd Holmberg, executive director of McCain Auditorium. “The tour helps make it possible to present world-class events at McCain on a yearly basis. The community also enjoys touring the homes and seeing a snapshot of the homeowners’ holiday traditions.”

The tour will feature:

* Jamie and Kim McAtee home, 2710 Heartland Valley Road;

* Jim Sherow and Bonnie Lynn-Sherow bed and breakfast home, 617 Colorado St.;

The Brian Setzer Orchestra Christmas Rocks! 10th Anniversary Tour!!

December 11, 2013 @ 7:00 pm
McCainKSU, 207 McCain Auditorium, Manhattan, KS, 66506, United States

The Brian Setzer Orchestra
Christmas Rocks! 10th Anniversary Tour!!

The Brian Setzer Orchestra brings their Christmas Rocks! 10th Anniversary Tour!! to McCain Auditorium. With a career spanning more than 30 years, Setzer has smash hits as founder/leader of The Stray Cats, his 18-piece Brian Setzer Orchestra and as a solo artist. His Christmas concert will include Setzer’s legendary guitar magic on hits such as “Rock This Town,” “(She’s) Sexy +17,” “Stray Cat Strut” and “Jump, Jive and Wail” and lots more, as well as his re-imagined and acclaimed holiday classics.

Three-time Grammy-award-winner Brian Setzer is a “musician’s musician” credited with consistently taking chances with innovative and daring musical styles, while single-handedly resurrecting two forgotten genres of music (rockabilly in the ‘80s and swing in the ‘90s). Along the way he has scored chart-topping hits throughout his decorated career as founder/leader of the Stray Cats, his 18-piece Brian Setzer Orchestra, and as a solo artist.

If that wasn’t enough, Setzer found tremendous success in redefining Christmas music for a generation desperately desiring something new and exciting around the holidays. The result was three best-selling holiday albums (Boogie Woogie Christmas, Dig That Crazy Christmas and Christmas Rocks!: The Best Of Collection) and an annual Christmas tour that has certainly become the most exciting annual rockin’ Christmas event on the planet. The Los Angeles Times calls it a show “whose sheer joy is irresistible!”
