Transgender Day of Remembrance

When:
November 21, 2013 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Where:
K-State Student Union, 17th & Anderson, Manhattan, KS, 66502, United States

Transgender Day of Remembrance is an opportunity for the K-State and Manhattan communities to come together and mark the passing of transgender and gender-variant individuals, or those perceived to be transgender, who have been murdered because of hate. Though we are not observing Transgender Day of Remembrance on the actual day itself (November 20th), LGBT & Allies welcomes students, staff, faculty and community members to join us in remembering those from our transgender community at large who have passed away.

Our keynote speaker will be Stephanie Mott, founder and executive director of the Kansas Statewide Transgender Education Project, K-STEP, and state chair for the Kansas Equality Coalition. Mott is a transsexual woman originally from Lawrence, but who now lives in Topeka. She will speak about her life and experiences surrounding her transition and being a transsexual woman. She will also provide information about the constant discrimination transgender people face in contemporary America, especially here in Kansas.

Rules:

- Each artist/group gets 3 songs or 10 minutes to perform. If we have more than 9 groups signed up, this goes down to 2 songs and seven minutes.

- Electrified instruments are allowed, but only if they go direct or have small amplifiers, in which case they will be turned down to minimum. No full bands. The general rule is, if it can’t be set up in 3 minutes or less, we don’t want it.

- We do not allow singers to sing to tracks, this isn’t karaoke. If you are a hip hop MC, you can use tracks but only if it’s original material and the vocals in the tracks are backing, as opposed to main.

- Want to win? Bring lots of friends! However, they must stay until the end of the night to vote.
