The US Air Guitar National Finals is the Super Bowl of Air Guitar. It’s a one-of-a-kind event that combines comedy, rock ‘n roll, and larger-than-life characters into one absurd mixture of insanity. Past judges have included Tom Morello, Brian May, Jason Sudeikis, the cast of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” and the Sklar brothers. All the national and local press combined could make this event a really big one in Kansas City. Every year US Air Guitar changes the city where they hold it, and competitive air guitar is huge on the coasts. In the past few years, they’ve held this at the 9:30 Club in Washington DC (sold out), The Metro in Chicago (sold out), and The Regency Ballroom in San Francisco (sold out).

Kansas City won the bid this year because of heavy lobbying on behalf of the local air guitar community and because of KC’s own Mean Melin, who flew to Finland last year and won the 18th Annual Air Guitar World Championships.

After bringing the Air Guitar World Championship trophy home to KC, Mean Melin was covered on Good Morning America, The Today Show, and Keith Olbermann Live, as well as being interviewed on HuffPost Live, and the BBC World News:

Here’s the International press coverage of last year’s world event:

Here’s his AGWC-winning video, with over 288,000 views:

Here’s the documentary, Air Guitar Nation, that was released in theaters and on DVD about the event:

Here’s a link to the Chicago 2011 National Finals-winning video:

Here’s a funny multimedia presentation that traces the history of competitive air guitar and the personal history of Mean Melin before winning it all:

The best air guitarists from all over the US will be flying into KC just for this. Mean Melin will be performing, but not competing, since he has an automatic bye all the way to Finland for the World Championship. Since he won last year, the World Championships will feature two Americans, because the winner of the National Final in KC will determine who flies to Finland with him.
