Awrite, Blues Fans!
The Internet tells me that’s how you say “hello” in Scots Gaelic. Don’t be alarmed, there’s a very good reason for this. On Saturday, December 14, at 7:30 PM at the Manhattan Arts Center, the Red State Blues Band will be performing a benefit concert to help the Manhattan High School Thespians get to the the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, and we hope you’ll be there to help out. Sound like an odd combination: Scotland and The Blues? Maybe, but then again, if you have a chance to hear the best damn blues band west of the Big Blue River, does it really matter?
Let’s back up a step and give you a little background. Many of the members of the Red State Blues Band have kids who either are alumni of or currently attending MHS. One of us has a kid who is currently attending *and* a member of the drama club, which is a local chapter of the International Thespian Society. And one of us is also an alumnus themselves, both of MHS and the Thespians. When we heard about the opportunity for these kids to get to go to this world-renowned event, we thought we might be able to help out, and hopefully you can, too.
The band will be donating our full earnings for the evening towards this goal, and encourage you to attend the show and give a little bit yourselves. We’ll be playing our usual hard-rocking, soul-shaking, gut-busting, caber-tossing, kilt-wearing, whiskey-drinking blues. (OK, there might not be enough headroom at the MAC for tossing the caber, but I’m not making any promises about kilts.) We’ve been working up several new songs, which you probably haven’t heard yet. And as a special treat, we’ve invited Linda Uthoff, MHS drama teacher and local star of the stage, to sing a few songs with us. It’s going to be a whole lot of fun, you won’t want to miss it. We hope you’ll be there and bring your checkbook to make a little extra donation for the cause while you’re there.
And speaking of your checkbook, did you know we have a new CD out? Titled “Down at the Ville”, our second CD was released in September. This is the culmination of months of hard work and we’re dying to share it with you, our favorite fans. You’ll be able to buy copies at the MAC, or any of our live appearances. If for some strange reason, you are unable to attend one of our performances, you can pick up a copy at fine merchants such as Sisters of Sound or Varneys (who gratefully offered the use of their marquee for our cover art) in Aggieville. And if you can’t even do that, please drop an email to any members of the band and we can get one mailed to you. Need I remind you that the Winter Holiday Gift Giving Season is nigh upon us? Our CDs make great gifts for the whole family!
Lots of great stuff to look forward to in the coming weeks. Come on down the the MAC and get your much-needed dose of the blues, and give a little extra to help out our hometown high school kids. Buy a few CDs. And always let the good times roll!
